Steve Jobs 在 1990 年接受 PBS/WGBH 纪录片系列 The Machine That Changed the World 其中一集 The Paperback Computer 的采访时，说了一句流传至今的金句：「电脑是心智的自行车」。(Computer has always been a bicycle for the mind.)

那个时候，他被自己创建的 Apple 驱逐出了董事会，新创立了一家计算机公司 NeXT (后续就有了 Pixar)，正站在个人计算新时代的门槛上。他回忆 12 岁时读到的一篇《科学美国人》(Scientific American) 杂志上的文章：

科学家测试地球上移动效率最高的物种，秃鹫 (Condor) 的效率排名第一，人类的移动效率排在长长的列表中的中段。但当人类骑上自行车时，人类的成绩就一跃成为效率冠军。

Jobs 说，这就是工具的魔力：「我们人类是天生的工具制造者，能发明东西把自身能力放大到惊人的程度 (spectacular magnitudes)。」所以，他用了「心智的自行车」这样一个比喻来说明个人计算机对于个体效率和创造力的影响和放大。

三十多年后，「心智的自行车」依旧是个很不错的比喻。只不过时代已经升级，我们现在有了 AI，「自行车」就显得还是慢了些……
